HEAD TO HEAD WALK FROM MIZEN HEAD CORK TO MALLIN HEAD, CO. DONEGAL
When: 22.06.2010 at 6AM TILL BLISTERS APPEAR
Where:
JOE CURRAN HAS BEEN WALKING FROM MIZEN HEAD IN CORK TO MALLIN HEAD IN CO DONEGAL TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR MY ABA THERAPY TO CONTINUE. AUTISM IS CLOSE TO JOES HEART AS I WILL LET JOE EXPLAIN IN HIS OWN WORDS, " We had a daughter, Suzanne, who had quite a rare condition called Tuberous Sclerosis. This was really a cluster of disabilities, including epilepsy, severe learning disability and autism. Having said that, Suzanne was (sadly she died in 2007, aged 26) a lot bigger than her disabilities. She was lively, laughed a lot and could be mischievous, to say the least. She certainly lived life to the full.
In trying to secure Suzanne's future, Liz and I founded Karuna. Karuna is a residential home in Carrick for nine residents with severe learning disabilities. Suzanne spent the last seven years of her life there looked after by wonderful, caring staff. The word Karuna is a buddhist word which means compassion. In real terms, it means 'skilful kindness'.
When I was a student, 40 years ago, I did a 'Rag Walk' for charity from Malin Head in Donegal to Mizen Head in Cork. It's roughly 400 miles, give or take a blister. I always wanted to make the return trip! So this time I'm walking from Mizen Head to Malin Head. These two 'Heads' are the southern-most and northern- most points (almost!) on the island of Ireland. That I can do it for such a worthy cause as helping Roan and his family is a privilege. With our experience of Suzanne, Liz and I have some understanding of the difficuties confronting you. Any event that can can bring attention to the need for greater support and services for people and their families affected by autism is worth doing. The great thing about Roan and your whole family is that you are not being crushed by the circumstances, difficult as they are.Quite the opposite, you are rising to the challenge. The 'Head 2 Head' long walk is just our little 'step' towards helping you.
I JUST WANT TO THANK JOE FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART FOR HIS KINDNESS & SELFLESSNESS TO GIVE UP ALL THIS TIME & EFFORT TO HELP ME IN MY QUEST FOR LEARNING. JOE SHOULD BE COMPLETING HIS LONG JOURNEY ON 05.07.2010. ALL SPONSORSHIP DONATIONS CAN BE MADE AT ANY NORTHERN BANK BRANCH.
